Kiwi (Chinese Gooseberry) - Male Pollinator 'O Sole Mio'

'O Sole Mio' is a specific, highly vital selection of male kiwi developed with a single, yet absolutely crucial goal: to serve as the perfect partner for red-fleshed female kiwi varieties. Because red kiwis wake up very early in spring, ordinary pollinators fail with them. 'O Sole Mio' is genetically set to wake up and bloom at the exact same moment as the red females, thus guaranteeing an abundant and trouble-free harvest.

Chinese Gooseberry (Actinidia chinensis) 'O Sole Mio' (Male Pollinator)

It produces no fruit itself; its sole task is pollen production for pollinating female flowers.

Main advantages of the pollinator:

  • Perfect blooming synchronization with red kiwi varieties (essential for harvest).
  • Very early waking (copies the biorhythm of red females).
  • High vitality and strong growth.
  • Abundant production of high-quality pollen.
  • One shrub pollinates multiple females.
Origin and Breeding
  • Botanical classification: Chinese gooseberry (Actinidia chinensis).
  • Function: It is a male plant of a dioecious species. It produces no fruit itself; its sole task is pollen production for pollinating female flowers.
Detailed variety description: Plant
  • Vigor: Very strong and highly vital. Grows quickly and forms a robust liana that requires firm support (pergola, trellis).
  • Blooming and pollen production: Characterized by rich blooming and produces a large amount of highly fertile (viable) pollen. Flowers contain only male organs (stamens) and lack a developed pistil.
  • Phenology and synchronization (Key feature): Red-fleshed kiwi varieties have a very early start to vegetation. The 'O Sole Mio' pollinator was specially selected to copy this early biorhythm. It is characterized by extremely high blooming synchronization – its flowers open at the exact same time as the flowers of the red females, which is absolutely essential for the successful pollination of the A. chinensis species.
Cultivation properties and characteristics
  • Function in the orchard:
    • Planting ratio: One male shrub 'O Sole Mio' can produce enough pollen to reliably pollinate 3 to 5 female plants (in commercial orchards, a ratio of 1:8 is sometimes used).
    • Location in the garden: Kiwis are pollinated mainly by insects (bees and bumblebees) and partly by wind. It is ideal to plant the male plant in close proximity to female plants (at a distance of max. 3 - 5 meters), preferably on the windward side.
  • Resistance and requirements:
    • Frost resistance and spring frosts: As a representative of the A. chinensis species, it is more sensitive to severe winter frosts (withstands down to approx. -12 °C to -15 °C). Requires a sheltered, warm location.
    • Soil and moisture: Requires moderately acidic, permeable soil and sufficient moisture during the growing season.
    • Agrotechnics (Pruning): Pruning the male plant differs from pruning females. The goal is to maximize the amount of flowers and keep vigorous growth under control. It is usually pruned immediately after blooming (in summer). This prevents the vital male from shading the female plants while promoting the formation of new shoots that will bloom the following year.

Drawbacks of the variety:

  • Produces no fruit (occupies space in the garden exclusively for the pollination function).
  • Sensitivity to spring frosts (due to very early bud break).
  • Lower winter frost resistance (typical for the A. chinensis species).
  • Vigorous growth requires regular and strict summer pruning (after blooming) so it does not overgrow and suppress female plants.
  • Not a suitable pollinator for late-blooming green kiwi varieties (species A. deliciosa, e.g., 'Hayward'), because it finishes blooming before their flowers open.
