Pawpaw (Asimina triloba) - Variety 'Prima 1216®'

'Prima 1216®' (also known as 'Montanari 1216') is the absolute pride of European breeding and the only significant pawpaw (Asimina) variety selected directly in the conditions of continental Europe. It is the perfect "entry-level" variety for growers – offering a mild, sweet taste without the heavy musky notes of wild forms, immediately appealing to modern palates. If you have space for only a single tree in your garden, 'Prima 1216®' is the safest choice thanks to its proven self-fertility and massive yields.

Pawpaw (Asimina triloba) 'Prima 1216®'

It is the perfect "entry-level" variety for growers – offering a mild, sweet taste without the heavy musky notes of wild forms, immediately appealing to modern palates.

Main advantages of the variety:

  • Reliable self-fertility (ideal for small gardens, 1 tree is enough).
  • Large fruits with a high proportion of pure flesh (approx. 89%).
  • Excellent, mild taste (vanilla, mango, marshmallow) without bitter or tart notes.
  • Early onset of fruiting and extremely high, regular yields.
  • Earlier ripening (mid-September) guarantees harvest even in cooler regions.
  • High frost resistance (-25 °C) and disease resistance (ideal for BIO).
Origin and Breeding
  • Botanical classification: Pawpaw / Three-lobed pawpaw (Asimina triloba).
  • Origin and history: The variety comes from Italy. It was selected on Domenico Montanari's farm in Faenza.
  • The story of number 1216: The number in the name is not accidental. In the late 20th century, Montanari sowed thousands of seeds from top American genetic lines (from the legendary Corwin Davis and the 'Sunflower' line). The plant with serial number 1216 immediately stood out for its massive vitality and ability to set fruit without a pollinator. It was subsequently studied by the University of Florence and licensed as the first major European cultivar.
Detailed variety description: Plant (Tree)
  • Vigor and size: Grows extremely quickly and vigorously. At maturity, it forms a medium-sized, compact tree about 3 to 4 meters high. It fills its space quickly and enters full fruiting 1-2 years earlier than slower-growing selections.
  • Crown shape: Forms a naturally neat, initially strictly pyramidal crown that changes into a more rounded and dense (shrubby) form with age and under the weight of the fruits.
  • Foliage: Leaves are large, decorative, fresh dark green. They maintain their color and structure even under intense summer sun.
  • Blooming and pollination (Key feature):
    • Self-fertility: This is the biggest asset of the variety for home gardeners. 'Prima 1216®' is scientifically confirmed to be fully self-fertile. It can reliably and abundantly fruit even as a complete solitaire without the presence of another pawpaw tree nearby.
    • Growing tip for maximum yield upgrade: Although 'Prima 1216®' is a brilliant solution for growing "alone", gardening practice shows that if you plant any other pawpaw variety near it over time, cross-pollination stimulates the tree to produce even more massive and perfectly weight-balanced fruits.
Fruits and Flavor Profile
  • Appearance and size: Fruits are large, oval, massive, and symmetrical. Average weight ranges between 200 – 250 g. The skin is thin, smooth, and attractively green-yellow at optimal maturity.
  • Flesh and yield: The variety has an excellent flesh-to-seed ratio. Seeds account for only about 10 to 11% of the total fruit weight, meaning nearly 89% pure flesh yield. The flesh has a gorgeous butter-yellow to golden-orange color. It is extremely tender, dense, creamy, and free of any unwanted grittiness or fibers. It literally melts on the tongue.
  • Taste: Offers a "soft" and very accessible flavor profile. It is sweet, pudding-like, with distinct notes of vanilla and marshmallow complemented by a mango base.
Cultivation properties and characteristics
  • Yield and ripening:
    • Ripening: It is a mid-late variety (approx. 250 days from blooming to harvest). Fruits ripen steadily in mid-September. Thanks to this earlier date, it ripens reliably and brings full harvest even in marginal and cooler foothill regions.
    • Yield: In European institutional tests, 'Prima 1216®' regularly ranks at the top in total yield per tree. It fruits abundantly, regularly, and does not suffer from alternate bearing.
  • Resistance and requirements:
    • Frost resistance: Excellent. Mature trees safely handle continental winters and frosts down to -25 °C (Zone 5).
    • Climate adaptation: Tolerates hot summers excellently and thrives in warm regions.
    • Disease resistance (BIO cultivation): Shows high resistance to common leaf pathogens (e.g., Phyllosticta leaf spot). Due to the high content of natural insecticides (acetogenins) in leaves and wood, it is rarely attacked by any serious pests. It is absolutely ideal for chemical-free organic cultivation.

Drawbacks of the variety:

  • Thin fruit skin means that upon ripening they are very sensitive to bruising and cannot be stored long-term (intended for direct consumption or quick processing – which is, however, typical for all pawpaws).
  • Requires protection from direct, sharp sun in the first 1-2 years after planting (like all pawpaws) until it builds a sufficient root system.
