Grapevine (Vitis sp.) - Variety 'Zilga'

'Zilga' is a legendary and highly prized Latvian grapevine variety that literally opened a new era of grape growing in Nordic and cold climates. It is an absolute champion in frost resistance, easily surviving even the harshest winters.

Grapevine (Vitis sp.) 'Zilga'

Thanks to its vigorous growth, low maintenance, and beautiful foliage, it is an ideal variety not only for the harvest but also for vertical greening of pergolas and gazebos in areas where other grapevine varieties would not survive.

Main advantages of the variety:

  • Extreme frost resistance (down to -40 °C) – mature vines do not need winter covering.
  • Very early ripening (late August).
  • High and stable yield (it is self-fertile).
  • Berries do not crack.
  • Vigorous growth – ideal for pergolas and gazebos.
  • Interesting sweet taste with a blueberry aroma.
Origin and Breeding
  • Origin: Latvia (Dviete municipality). The variety was bred by the famous Latvian breeder Pauls Sukatnieks, who from 1959 dedicated himself to crossing grapevines for the open field conditions of the north. The variety is successfully registered in Latvia (since 2000) and trademarked in Sweden. Today it is commonly grown in Scandinavia, Belarus, Russia, and even in the USA (Minnesota).
  • Genetics (Crossing): It is a very complex interspecific hybrid combining genes of the American grapevine (Vitis labrusca), Amur grapevine (Vitis amurensis), and European grapevine (Vitis vinifera). Exact pedigree: 'Jubilej Novgoroda' x ('Dvietes Zilā' x 'Smuglyanka').
Detailed variety description: Plant
  • Vigor: The vine grows extremely strongly and vigorously. The shoots mature (lignify) very well and on time, which is crucial for their survival in winter.
  • Leaves: They are medium-sized. Thanks to its dense growth, the variety is perfect for vertical greening (shading).
Fruits and Flavor Profile
  • Bunches: They are medium-sized, weighing 100 to 200 g. They are relatively dense (compact), and a huge advantage is that the berries in them do not crack.
  • Berries: Small to medium (weight 2.1 to 3 g), round. They have a dark blue color covered with a distinct light wax bloom. They contain 3 to 5 seeds.
  • Skin and texture: The skin is thick. Typical for this variety is the "slip-skin" effect (inherited from V. labrusca) – when eaten, the thick skin easily separates from the flesh like a "sac".
  • Taste and juice: The juice is light purple. The taste is pleasantly sweet, tasty, with a specific but only mildly pronounced "foxy" flavor (typical of V. labrusca) and a delicate aroma reminiscent of blueberries.
Cultivation properties and agrotechnics
  • Ripening and yield:
    • Harvest time: It is a very early variety. Grapes ripen as early as late August to early September.
    • Yield: The variety is self-fertile. It is extremely productive and provides stable, annual yields even in poorer growing conditions.
    • Use: Universal. The grapes are excellent for fresh consumption, but surprisingly, good quality wine can also be made from them.
  • Resistance and requirements (Key features):
    • Frost resistance (Extreme): This is the most frost-resistant variety from P. Sukatnieks' workshop. Mature wood can withstand frosts down to -40 °C.
    • Winter protection: Unlike other varieties, mature 'Zilga' does not need to be covered for the winter or taken down from the trellis.
    • Diseases: Although in normal practice in colder regions it appears to be resistant, expert texts warn that the variety is genetically medium susceptible to downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola) and powdery mildew (Uncinula necator). Therefore, in warmer and wetter years, it may require Bio/fungicidal protection.

Drawbacks of the variety:

  • Thick skin that separates from the flesh when eaten ("slip-skin"), which may not suit everyone.
  • Seeds in the berries (3-5 pcs).
  • Medium susceptibility to downy and powdery mildew (requires monitoring of leaf health).
  • Smaller bunches and berries compared to modern table varieties.
