Resilience and Spicy Flavor from the North: Introducing the Estonian Cherries 'Madissoni roosa', 'Meelika', and 'Norri'

Growing heat-loving stone fruits in colder regions is often a battle against spring frosts and fungal diseases. Therefore, for the Spring 2026 season, we have reached for genetics that are accustomed to the harsh conditions of Northern Europe. We present to you three exceptional cherry varieties from Estonia that combine frost hardiness, reliable yield, and, for us, very unusual, spicy flavor profiles.

“Estonian breeding brings not only resilience to our gardens but also completely new flavors. While we are used to purely sweet cherries, varieties like 'Meelika' and 'Norri' surprise with a unique, sweet-spicy aroma that becomes even more pronounced during processing.”

1. 'Madissoni roosa': Pink Certainty with Large Fruits

The variety 'Madissoni roosa' (translated as Madisson's Pink, registered in 2013) is a modern Estonian standard for both commercial and home orchards. It was bred with an emphasis on reliability and visual attractiveness.

Why Choose It?

The tree has medium-strong growth and a sparse crown, which greatly facilitates the penetration of sunlight to the fruits and reduces the pressure of fungal diseases. It is a partially self-fertile variety, so it can produce a crop even without the presence of another cherry tree, although a pollinator will always increase the yield.

Pink Juice and Easy Pitting

The fruits are large, round, and have a beautiful light red color. The flesh is yellowish-pink with a harmonious sweet-sour taste and produces a pinkish to colorless juice. A huge advantage when canning is the pit, which separates very easily from the flesh.

2. 'Meelika': A Black Pearl with a Spicy Soul

The variety 'Meelika' (registered in 2009) is a proven classic in Estonian orchards. It originated as a seedling from the famous Russian variety 'Leningradskaya chornaya' and inherited its excellent disease resistance.

Reliable and Self-Fertile

Similar to 'Madissoni roosa', 'Meelika' is also partially self-fertile, making it an excellent choice for small gardens. The tree grows moderately strong and forms a nice spherical crown.

Unique Taste Experience

It ripens in the second week of July. Its fruits are medium-sized and almost black when fully ripe. The dark red flesh is soft, very juicy, and stands out with a unique, sweet, and spicy taste that you will not find in common varieties. The juice is an intense dark red, excellent for syrups and jams.

3. 'Norri': The Sister with Large Fruits and a Weeping Crown

The variety 'Norri' is a direct genetic sister of 'Meelika' (they come from the same cross, registered in the same year) but differs from it in several key characteristics.

Smaller Tree, Larger Fruits

While 'Meelika' has medium-strong growth, 'Norri' has a smaller stature with characteristic weeping branches. This habit not only looks very aesthetic in the garden but, above all, significantly facilitates harvesting. In addition, the fruits of 'Norri' are slightly larger and have a broadly heart-shaped form.

Firmer Flesh and the Need for a Pollinator

Compared to its sister, 'Norri' has firmer dark red flesh while retaining the same pleasantly spicy taste. An important difference lies in the flower biology – 'Norri' is fully cross-pollinated. To bear fruit, it absolutely needs a pollinator nearby, ideally its sister 'Meelika' or another variety blooming at the same time.
