Mulberry Illinois Everbearing is an excellent hybrid variety created by crossing white mulberry (Morus alba) and red mulberry (Morus rubra). This fruiting mulberry is extremely popular with gardeners due to its high yield, great flavour and long harvest period - the fruit ripens from June to September.
The tree grows to a height of 3 to 5 metres and forms a dense, spreading crown. The annual increment is 30-50 cm. It is suitable for both small and large gardens as a fruit tree and as an ornamental tree.
The fruits are long, dark purple to black berries, similar to blackberries, growing to 3-4 cm. Their taste is sweet, juicy, with a mild acidity. They are suitable for direct consumption, making jams, syrups, wine or drying.
The tree flowers in May with inconspicuous white-yellow flowers. As it is a self-pollinating variety, it does not require additional pollinators. It produces continuously throughout the summer, extending the harvest period to 10 weeks.
It thrives best in a sunny or semi-shaded position.
Illinois Everbearing Mulberry is not soil demanding, but prefers a permeable, slightly moist and nutritious soil.
It is fully hardy and tolerates the winters of central Europe without problems.
Pruning is not necessary, but mild shaping in the pre-spring period will promote vigour and fertility.
This fruit mulberry is an excellent choice for those looking for an unusual fruit for the garden that is both fertile and undemanding. Its appearance and shading properties also make it suitable as an ornamental tree for rest areas in the garden.
