Kiwi 'Lucy' (Actinidia arguta 'Lucy') is one of the newer varieties of hardy mini kiwifruit gaining popularity among temperate growers. This climbing plant is not only an attractive addition to the garden but also produces tasty, sweet fruit. It grows to a height of about 6-8 metres at maturity, climbing up the supports by means of tendrils. Its large, smooth fruit makes it an ideal choice for those looking for an undemanding yet productive plant.
The fruits of this variety are larger, with an average size of about 4 cm, and have smooth green skin with a delicate red cheek. The flesh is soft, juicy and sweet, making this variety an excellent alternative to the common kiwifruit. The fruit ripens in late September to early October and can be eaten with the skin on. As it is a female variety, it needs a suitable pollinator for pollination, such as the male plant Actinidia arguta 'Weiki M.
The 'Lucy' kiwifruit is not difficult to grow, but it is important to follow a few guidelines to ensure a bountiful harvest.
For optimum growth and fruiting, kiwifruit needs a sunny site that is sheltered from strong winds. It thrives best against south or south-west facing walls where heat builds up. The ideal soil should be slightly acidic, well permeable, loose and rich in humus. Kiwifruit is not suited to soils with high calcium content as leaf chlorosis can occur. Also unsuitable are waterlogged and heavy soils, which can lead to root rot.
Kiwi 'Lucy' requires regular but moderate watering to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. In dry periods it is important to water more frequently.
Fertilisation should be balanced - excess nitrogen causes vigorous leaf growth but limits flowering and fruiting. It is advisable to fertilise in spring with organic fertilisers such as compost or farmyard manure, or use special fertilisers for fruit trees.
Kiwi 'Lucy' produces on biennial wood, so it is important to prune it correctly. For the first two years, it is advisable to let the plant grow freely to allow it to get stronger. After this period, pruning is carried out, leaving the strong branches, while the three-year-old and older wood is removed.
Pruning is carried out in late winter, in February, when unproductive branches are removed and the crown of the plant is shaped. During the summer, a slight shortening of the shoots may also be carried out to encourage the wood to mature before winter.
This variety is very hardy, withstanding frosts down to -29 °C, which makes it suitable for growing in colder regions. However, it is a good idea to protect young plants from extreme frosts in the first few years with mulch or cheesecloth so that the roots are not exposed to temperature fluctuations.
Kiwi 'Lucy' is a great choice for anyone who wants to grow exotic fruit with minimal care. Its high hardiness, tasty fruit and decorative growth make it an ideal addition to any garden. If you are looking for a plant that will not only give you aesthetic pleasure, but also an abundant crop of healthy fruit, the 'Lucy' kiwi is the right choice.
