The 'Szego' chestnut ( Castanea sativa × Castanea mollissima × Castanea crenata ) is a hybrid variety created by combining European, Chinese and Japanese chestnuts. This combination ensures resistance to disease, in different climatic conditions and the production of large, tasty fruits. The 'Szego' variety is popular with gardeners and commercial growers.

The fruits of 'Szego' are large to very large, dark brown and glossy, with a smooth skin that peels easily. The flesh is sweet, tender and aromatic, making this variety ideal for roasting, cooking or making chestnut puree. The tree starts fruiting moderately late, around mid-October, and the fruit is easily released from the hedgehog.

The 'Szego' variety is particularly resistant to chestnut canker, making it suitable for growing even in areas where these diseases are a significant problem. The tree reaches a height of 8-12 metres, has a wide range, a spreading crown and moderately rapid growth. The leaves are dark green, oval, with a finely serrated margin, taking on a beautiful golden yellow hue.

Chestnut 'Szego' prefers a sunny, warm location with protection from the wind. It grows best in slightly acidic, deep and permeable soil. The tree does not tolerate prolonged waterlogging, so good wood must be provided. It needs the presence of other varieties such as "Berganz", 'Marigoule' or 'Marsol' for pollination, as it is an alien pollinator.

The advantages of this variety include hybrid resistance to disease, high fertility and large, high-quality fruit. In addition, 'Szego' is highly adaptable to a variety of soil and climatic conditions, making it ideal for home and other cultivation. The fruits are versatile in the kitchen and suitable for direct use, baking or pureeing.

Ideal for growers looking for excellent hardiness, aesthetic appeal and high quality fruit, the 'Szego' chestnut can produce even in challenging conditions
