Blackcurrant Sofievskaya is a large-fruited variety with exceptional resistance to diseases, pests and adverse conditions. It was bred by Vladimir Pavlovich Kopan and his wife, and was entered into the Variety Register in 2001.
The plants have a strong, semi-dwarf habit and are well suited for growing in sunny or semi-shady locations. The variety is self-pollinating and does not require a pollinator, which makes it easy to grow. The fruits are large, weighing 3,2 to 3,6 grams, evenly sized, round-ovate, deep black and shiny. They do not drop when ripe and are easily separated by dry picking when harvested.
The flavour is excellent, with a balanced acid-sweet taste, suitable for both fresh consumption and processing. It ripens in late June/early July. The yield is stable and moderate, averaging 1,6 kg per bush, which corresponds to approximately 10,5 tonnes per hectare.
The variety has complex resistance to fungal diseases, is resistant to pests, drought and late spring frosts. Particularly valuable is its resistance to the currant woolly adelgid (Eriophyes ribis). Sofievskaya is fully hardy and its unpretentiousness makes it an ideal choice for both professional plantations and home gardens.
